Two weeks ago, we reviewed the branch of the Greek frozen yoghurt chain Chillbox on Grasmarkt/rue du Marché aux Herbes in this column. A few weeks ago, and just a few doors down from Chillbox, a Turkish business also opened, and because choosing sides between Greeks and Turks is a delicate matter, we wouldn’t want to forget the Turkish neighbours. In fact, this is also the first Belgian branch of a chain that has already conquered various parts of the world, namely the traditional pastry manufacturer Güllüoglu.

In 2009, a number of the creative talents at the Paris-based design studio H5 made a hilarious animated short film called Logorama, in which two Michelin men police officers try to chase down a fugitive Ronald McDonald in a city made completely of logos. Ludovic Houplain, one of the filmmakers, has now produced an excellent sequel: an enormous collection of logos.

From one of the first high-end multi-brand stores in Brussels in 1976 to a 1,500 m² luxury department store in 2013: Francis Ferent recently reopened its doors on Louizalaan/avenue Louise after two years of intensive renovation and expansion.

The delicatessen (traiteur) business has changed a lot. It has been a long time now since delis combined peaches with tuna and offered shrimps stuffed into unripe tomatoes. The traiteurs are now in tune with today’s tastes and habits, not just in presenting genuinely original preparations, but also in the way they have extended beyond their kitchens and counters, giving customers a chance to sample their wares on the spot. In this modern vein, one establishment that is well worth checking out is Point Albert.

Op zondag 26 mei krijgen de allerkleinsten nog eens een koninklijke behandeling in gemeenschapscentrum De Kam in Wezembeek-Oppem. Tijdens de Kinderhoogdag worden zij een dag lang getrakteerd op knettergekke animatie, plezante workshops en theatervoorstellingen van de bovenste plank. Creatievelingen en waaghalzen kunnen zich uitleven tijdens de workshop Post van Mister Ripley, het atelier Striptekenen of de stoomcursus bij Het circus is in de stad. In de theaterzaal kun je gaan kijken naar de muzikale voorstelling Snif van Fast Forward, over een zieke kleuter die troost vindt bij haar knuffel (14.00, vanaf 2,5 jaar), of naar Charlieston, een woordloze productie van Circus Krak! (foto) waarin vrolijk wordt gejongleerd met dans, poppentheater en acrobatie (17.00, alle leeftijden). Tussendoor kunnen kids zich een nieuwe coupe aanmeten bij Quoi?fuur, een knipgelegenheid die gespecialiseerd is in hanenkammen en haarbloemstukken, of een rondje maken op de Dieromdom, een tot draaimolen omgebouwde bakfiets. Het onthaal is in handen van tante Denise, die niets liever doet dan lieve kindertjes plat te knuffelen. Kun je er op 26 mei niet bij zijn omdat je al naar je eigen tante moet? Geen paniek: op 2 juni is er een nieuwe Kinderhoogdag in GC De Boesdaalhoeve in Sint-Genesius-Rode! Vooraf reserveren wordt aanbevolen omdat het deelnemersaantal voor sommige activiteiten beperkt is. Een Kinderhoogdag-bandje, dat toegang biedt tot alle activiteiten en 6 euro kost, koop je best op voorhand, maar is ook de dag zelf nog te verkrijgen vanaf 13.00u aan het onthaal.

Het Brusselse Circusatelier Zonder Handen organiseert komend weekend voor de derde keer op rij zijn jaarlijkse publieke circusdagen. Maar liefst 400 leden van ‘de school’, tussen 4 en 47 jaar oud, zetten daarvoor het BRONKS-huis op stelten.

Met het overlijden van Raoul De Keyser verleden jaar verloor ons land een groot schilder. Vandaar dat het kunstenaarscollectief NICC een hommagetentoonstelling heeft bedacht waarin zijn werk wordt gecombineerd met dat van vier Belgische schilders met een gelijkaardige sensibiliteit. En dat zijn met Roger Raveel, Luc Tuymans, Koen van den Broek en Jan Van Imschoot niet de minsten.

Avec son sourire enjôleur de gendre idéal, il fait passer en douceur ses vannes acides sur nos comportements contemporains. Adepte du stand-up à l’américaine, Mustapha El Atrassi n’aime rien tant que l’improvisation et la confrontation avec son public.

If everything goes according to plan, the House of European History – a large museum devoted to the history of Europe – will open in the monumental Eastman Building in the Leopold Park in 2015. If you can’t wait that long, you can already visit the slightly smaller museum Domo de Europa Historio en Ekzilo. The museum was founded following the intense research of theatre director Thomas Bellinck in preparation for the KVS city project Tok Toc Knock in the European Quarter, and is presented as a look-back at the European project from the future.
