De kunstwereld is al geruime tijd in de ban van spectaculaire installaties. Onlangs opende zowel Gagosian Gallery als Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac in Parijs gigantische bijhuizen, speciaal voor werk op groot formaat. De Galicische, in Brussel woonachtige street artist Isaac Cordal zweert bij het omgekeerde.

Les spécialistes de l’alimentation font souvent le rêve que chacun dispose de deux heures par jour pour faire un bon déjeuner. Pour manger sain, frais, de saison et, dans la foulée, digérer sans stress. Malheureusement, la réalité est tout autre. Le plus souvent, il faut faire vite et mal. Face à cette contrainte, de nombreuses enseignes proposent une nourriture « fast »… plus ou moins « good ».

Jef Neve stond afgelopen zomer niet toevallig op de affiche van zowel Pukkelpop als Jazz Middelheim. Met zijn nieuwe cd Sons of the new world legt hij meer dan ooit een link tussen beide werelden. Zijn trio werd voor de gelegenheid zelfs uitgebreid met vijf blazers.

DNA is a music club with a mythical reputation in the alternative scene. It opened in 1983, and has hosted numerous punk, new wave, rock, metal and hip-hop concerts over the years. Dozens of locals whose black T-shirts have long since retreated to the back of their closets have nostalgic memories of the place.

Seven new releases this week, taking you to places far and wide, such as Atlanta (with Clint Eastwood), beyond the Romanian hills (with Cristian Mungiu), the Bay of Chesapeake (with some censored horror footage), and the future (with a heavily armed judge shooting away)!

Nederland heeft een nieuw kabinet, maar door de bezuinigingen van het vorige houden per 1 januari een pak theatergezelschappen op te bestaan. Bij de komst van enkele Nederlandse artiesten en gezelschappen vestigt het Kaaitheater de aandacht op deze situatie.

Dredd is the least honourable of judges. In a near, completely perverted future, he stalks the streets of the dilapidated Mega City in an attempt to stop the worst criminals and bring them to summary justice. Rather than using a gavel, he carries a range of guns. One of them shoots ping-pong balls into your mouth, making your head explode. He easily outstrips Dirty Harry, and is more sparing with his deep bass voice than with his bullets and executions. Film heroes don’t get much more dubious or fascistic.

Vijf jaar nadat hij met 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 days de Gouden Palm won, treedt de Roemeen Cristian Mungiu weer op het voorplan. Beyond the hills is een intense studie van de diepgaande vriendschap tussen twee jonge, kansarme vrouwen, maar ook van bijgeloof, individuele verantwoordelijkheid en exorcisme. Kortom: u weet na de film waarover praten.

The section of Charleroisesteenweg/chaussée de Charleroi between Louizalaan/avenue Louise and Overwinningstraat/rue de la Victoire is a great area for connoisseurs. Among other things, you’ll find the culinary Walhalla Mmmmh!, the wine and spirits paradise Mig’s World Wines, and the chocolatier Zaabär. And not long ago, Bram and his wife Yumi opened this little establishment.

It remains a mystery to us how the excellent SteakFrit’ in Predikherenstraat/rue des Dominicains disappeared so soon. But a newcomer has now opened up at number 12: Hemgie’s.
