Latin jazz developed in New York when Cuban immigrants began to mix Latino music and jazz. The Brussels quartet Azu-K is taking this gloriously swinging music to Brussel Bad/Bruxelles les Bains, with a variety of guests and a surprise in store.

Ah, good times! We thought they would last forever... Well, no such luck, but August is bound to be jam-packed with sunny city scenes. It surely has plenty of activities to keep you busy, as our massive second summer issue will prove. We just finished working on it, by next Wednesday you will be able to find it everywhere in the city. But for now, enjoy July's last warm embrace (in pictures)!

Since the exhibition series can finally truly call itself the "Summer" of Photography, nothing is standing in the way of a festive approach of the subject. And Recyclart is doing just that with a projection of work by fourteen photographers.

The launch of the second Belgian edition of the Kosmopolite Art Tour, a collaboration between Farm Prod, Laid Back, Chez Zelle and Urbana, is drawing closer. After Brussels in 2010, this year Louvain-la-Neuve will be invaded by a mix of the finest Belgian and international street artists. They will add a dash of colour to the youngest city in the country from 30 July to 5 August. But Brussels won't be entirely ignored.

Ça ne peut pas être tous les jours la fête nationale, les Jeux Olympiques ou Couleur Café. Mais, sous la canicule ou sous le déluge, chaque jour, il y a du cinéma. Les salles obscures n’ont presque jamais de jour de fermeture. Petit aperçu de ce que cet été a à offrir en nouveautés.

2012 is het jaar van De Mens. Dan staat de Nederlandstalige rockgroep rond Frank Vander linden 20 jaar op het podium. De groep is deze zomer dan ook niet weg te branden van de festivals. De Mens is onder meer headliner op Plazey, het festival dat op 1 juli plaatsvindt in het Elisabethpark in Koekelberg.

Cas Oorthuys
“Ik wil zeker de fototentoonstelling Cas Oorthuys, Brussel 1946-1956 gaan bekijken in het Museum van de Stad Brussel. De tentoonstelling schetst een portret van Brussel na de oorlog. Het is verplichte kost voor mensen die, zoals ik, nostalgisch zijn naar een tijd die ze nooit hebben meegemaakt.”

“Het Josaphatpark, waar ik als kleine jongen met mijn vader ging voetballen en waar ik nu met mijn zoon kom, is dit jaar zeer geslaagd opgefrist. Veel groen, glooiende paden, allerlei vogels en twee levende ezels. Meer heeft je humeur niet nodig.”

“Als ik er de tijd voor zou hebben, zou ik graag een koffie gaan drinken en wat nadenken in een hippe koffiebar, omringd door andere artistieke types. Brussel had nog niet zoveel zaken waar dat kon. Maar onlangs leerde een vriend mij OR kennen, in de Ortsstraat, vlak bij de Beurs. Mooie plek, fijne bediening en veel artistieke types die er koffie komen drinken en nadenken.”

De Britse Susheela Raman, dochter van Indiase migranten, groeide op in Australië alvorens terug te keren naar Londen om op zoek te gaan naar haar Indiase roots. Op Brosella stelt ze haar vijfde album voor, waarop Indiase muziek opnieuw hand in hand gaat met invloeden uit het Westen.

Les Rencontres de Bamako, Biennale africaine de la photographie, ont été organisées pour la première fois en 1994 dans la capitale malienne et sont devenues l’événement panafricain par excellence pour la photographie sur le continent et pour la diaspora. Trois expositions issues de la Biennale sont présentées à Bruxelles.

Too stiff? Extremely shy? No sense of rhythm? Set all your preconceptions and excuses aside because here comes a new Bal Moderne... The contemporary version of the “bal populaire” will make even the most wooden wallflower an inspired dancer. Two guest choreographers will teach two short dances of 4 minutes each in two 45-minute sessions. No dance experience is required, but you do need some concentration and, especially, lots of enthusiasm. Big name choreographers like Wim Vandekeybus, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Michèle Anne De Mey, etc. have whipped up veritable dance crazes at previous editions. The guests on 8 and 15 July are a surprise, but one thing is for sure, there will be a great atmosphere. A DJ will animate the dance sessions with his own tunes and keep the energy pumping between the 45-minute sessions; a perfect marriage between the group feeling and your highly personal creativity or dance style. For this open-air edition, Bal Moderne is collaborating with piQniQ from Brusselicious. An ideal occasion to picnic on the grass (before or after the Ball) or to drink an aperitif. In short: do not expect the seriousness of a (technical) dance class, or the trendy atmosphere of a club. Expect solidarity, fun, and of course some enjoyable exercise, for all ages. Now all we need is some summery sunshine!
