Anton Corbijn Inside Out

If anyone deserves not to be turned inside out or outside in, it is Anton Corbijn. For one simple reason: his photos, posters, music videos, album covers, and two films speak for themselves. They might depict Joy Division, U2, Depeche Mode, Metallica, or George Clooney, but you see Corbijn. Especially when you compare the works. Or a selection of them, because his oeuvre is very large, diverse, and scattered. The Dutchman lives for his work, as we learned from the documentary by Klaartje Quirijns. Quirijns followed Corbijn for almost four years. She recorded the testimonies of Bono and Metallica that she couldn’t do without...and just try to get hold of people like that. She visits him at home in The Hague. She lets him talk. She takes him to Strijen, the town in South Holland where it all started. She sees, finds, and suggests all kinds of things; particularly his strict Protestant upbringing that might explain his work, motivations, and ideas, but obviously doesn’t or only partly. There is nothing wrong with the documentary and certainly not with the gentle, assiduous man who enjoys his work. But I have now rewatched the films The American and Control and looked through two books of photos, and I felt much closer to Corbijn.



--NL-- Een vreselijke titel vind ik het. Als er iemand het verdient om niet inside out, outside in of binnenstebuiten gekeerd te worden, dan wel Anton Corbijn. Ten eerste en ten laatste: zijn foto’s, affiches, videoclips, platenhoezen en twee films spreken voor zich. Ze beelden Joy Division, U2, Depeche Mode, Metallica of George Clooney af maar je ziet Corbijn. Zeker als je het werk naast elkaar legt. Of een stuk ervan, want het is nogal omvangrijk, veelzijdig en verspreid. De Nederlander leeft voor zijn werk. Zo leert de documentaire van Klaartje Quirijns. De documentaire leert veel. Quirijns is niet over één nacht ijs gegaan. Ze heeft Corbijn bijna vier jaar gevolgd. Heeft de getuigenissen van Bono en Metallica die niet mochten ontbreken... maar krijg mannen van dat kaliber maar eens te pakken. Ze bezoekt hem thuis in Den Haag. Laat hem praten. Neemt hem mee naar Strijen, de gemeente in Zuid-Holland waar het voor hem allemaal begon. Ze ziet, vindt, suggereert van alles – de streng protestantse opvoeding op kop – wat zijn werk, drijfveren, ideeën zou kunnen verklaren maar dat uiteraard niet doet of maar voor de helft. Er is niks mis met de documentaire en al helemaal niet met de zachtaardige, graag en hardwerkende geportretteerde. Maar ondertussen heb ik de films The American en Control nogmaals bekeken en twee fotoboeken. En toen was Corbijn echt wel dichterbij.



--FR-- Je trouve le titre horrible. S’il y a bien quelqu’un qui ne mérite pas d’être retourné dans tous les sens, c’est bien Anton Corbijn. Avant tout parce que ses photos, ses affiches, ses clips vidéo, ses pochettes de disques et ses deux films parlent d’eux-mêmes. Ils mettent en scène Joy Division, U2, Depeche Mode, Metallica ou George Clooney, mais on y voit Corbijn. Certainement si on rapproche ses œuvres. Ou du moins une partie de son œuvre, qui est plutôt vaste, protéiforme et éparpillée. Ce Néerlandais vit pour son travail. C’est ce que montre le documentaire, très instructif, de Klaartje Quirijns, qui ne s’est pas aventurée en terrain inconnu : elle a suivi Corbijn pendant presque quatre ans. Les témoignages de Bono et de Metallica ne pouvaient pas en être absents... Mais ce n’est pas facile d’approcher des gens d’un tel calibre. Elle a rendu visite à l’artiste chez lui, à Den Haag. Elle l’a laissé parler. Elle l’a emmené à Strijen, la commune de Hollande-Méridionale où tout a commencé pour lui. Elle voit, trouve et suggère tout - une stricte éducation protestante en tête - ce qui pourrait expliquer son œuvre, ses motivations, ses idées, mais en fait, cela n’explique rien, ou alors à moitié. On ne peut rien reprocher à ce documentaire et certainement pas à ce travailleur acharné et doux dont il fait le portrait. Mais entre-temps, j’ai à nouveau regardé ses films The American et Control et deux livres de photos et Corbijn était alors beaucoup plus proche.
